No TV Tuner. Integrated sound. HP USB keyboard and optical mouse We also bought this monitor at for it (though I doubt it matters in this case): HP S1931a 18.5' Diagonal Widescreen LCD Monitor The problem started about two months ago when the computer shut off for no reason while idle (before sleep should have started). Upon restarting the computer, it gave beep codes that there was a problem with the memory (1 short beep, 1 long beep, long pause, repeat). After powering back down and removing all peripherals and the power cord, the RAM was removed (2x 2GB), checked for any dust, bad seating, pins bent, etc. Both sticks of RAM were reinstalled and the problem seemed to be solved. Fast forward two months (to just out of warranty), the same problem occurs.

This time replacing the RAM did not fix the problem. Occasionally the computer would boot properly and then randomly shut off regardless of what the processor was doing (idle or under load of 25% or greater).

Also, beep codes would only present maybe half the time when it wouldn't boot. The outlet was checked for proper power and a different (proven) outlet was also tried. At this point, the computer won't start enough for any display at all, not even blue screen.

What it DOES do upon power-up:. All fans (power supply, CPU cooler, case fan) power up and spin at full speed. Hard drive DOES spool up. Green light on PSU stays on steady. CD-drive WILL open and close normally. What is DOESN'T do upon power up:.

No display at all. No beep codes. No blue light on power button (top of case).

CPU does NOT get warm to touch after 5 seconds of being powered on (with fan and heat sink removed and unplugged). With both sticks of RAM removed, no beeping of any kind. I also tried using an old video card I had lying around, thinking maybe the integrated graphics were no longer working. The video card DOES get power as its fan turns on, also at full speed. Still no display. I have already purchased a matched pair of replacement RAM sticks, exact same specs and brand (Crucial), no difference. I had tried every combination of each stick in each slot with the original RAM first, so I assumed it was the sticks and replaced them.

Now that the RAM has been replaced and no beep codes, I suspect either the motherboard or the CPU. I also tried resetting the BIOS by both removing the battery for 10+ minutes and also moving the jumper from 2-3 to 1-2 for 10 seconds and replacing (with the power off).

What I would like to know is which component I need to replace to get this computer working again before it's tax season. I would like to think it is the CPU because it stays cool to the touch after powering on. If that is the case, can anyone confirm that this is an appropriate replacement? ( Intel Pentium E5700 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX) If it's the motherboard (I hope not), can it be replaced without having to re-install windows? I can't seem to find an exact replacement for the Foxconn H-I41 -uATX (Eton).

Does HP have any of these in stock that could be shipped out? I know the computer is already out of warranty (barely) and can do the work myself, but need some help determining the problem as I don't want to throw money at this to get it working right. Thanks in advance for your help! Hello jkalbin, I would suspect a bad motherboard rather than the processor.

Failures with processors do not occur often at all. You should never power up a computer with the heatsink/fan assembly not attached to the processor. Just 5 seconds without the heatsink/fan assembly could easily burn a processor out.

The fact that the processor did not get warm does not mean it is not working properly, if the motherboard is not sending the proper power to the processor. Motherboard failures happen many times more often than processor failures. I have had only one processor to fail in over 25 years of working with computers. Just some thoughts. Hi Dave, thanks for the response. Monitor and cable are operational (tested on another computer), and the monitor DOES wake up when plugged in to the problem PC, it just doesn't get any input.

The PC doesn't have any PCI cards in it, and I removed the graphics card I had tried previously. It's pretty bare-bones as it is used for simple tasks and nothing graphics intensive. Built in graphics, no sound card, no aftermarket wireless. After unplugging the SATA cables for the hard drive and the CD drive and booting up (no other connectors besides monitor, USB mouse and keyboard), same result. No beeping of any kind, the fans all turn on full speed, still no light to the power button on the top of the tower. Solid green light on the back of the PSU.

No blue screen, monitor just searches for input to no avail. I'm not sure what no beeping means. Hello jkalbin, I would suspect a bad motherboard rather than the processor. And from the research I've done, this motherboard seems to be the closest for a replacement this work? Hello jkalbin, I'm sorry to say that motherboard would likely not work in your system. Your system has a Foxconn H-IG41-uATX motherboard. The issue you will have replacing the motherboard is that you would also have to purchase a copy of Windows, since the HP Windows would not install on the other motherboard.

HP, as well as the other OEM suppliers, 'Tatoo' their motherboards so the operating system cannot be installed on any other system. Jkalbin wrote: Do you know if there is any way to get a direct replacement from HP? Or is a new copy of Windows the only option?

Also, would that motherboard work with my current hardware (provided I buy a new copy of Windows)? Even if I have to buy Windows and the motherboard, it would still be cheaper than a whole new desktop. And the remaining components are barely more than a year old with minimal use. Thanks again! Hello jkalbin, The part number for the motherboard for your system is 608883-001 It is not available from HP, but is listed as available from a HP supplier.

I have never had any good experiences trying to purchase anything form one of these HP suppliers. You might Google the part number and locate one. I would be wary of any that was on eBay, since many of these are refrubished or system pulls, meaning they were pulled from another system. In other words used. You would still need to purchase a copy of Windows, since as I mentioned earlier, the motherboard would not accept the HP Recovery Restore disk since the motherboard would not be the one the Recovery disk was created for. All the other hardware should work just as it did with the original motherboad. You would need some new thermal paste to apply between the processor and the heatsink.

We are assuming the motherboard is faulty. You could have another issue that is preventing the system to not work as it should. Just some thoughts.
